A safety razor is a shaving instrument with a guard that glides along the skin to limit the exposure of the razor blade and reduce the risk of serious injury while shaving. K.C. Gillette created the first modern safety razor that was patented and mass produced in 1904. It was safer for men to use than a straight razor and allowed them to shave at home without relying on the services of a professional barber. It quickly became the preferred razor until the 1970s, but remains popular with men who have returned to traditional shaving for its cost savings and superior results. Today the term "safety razor" is used to reference traditional double edge safety razors as well as disposable multiblade cartridge razors, since both have cutting heads designed to reduce blade exposure.
