What does "shave ready" mean?

Manufacturers of straight razors, such as Dovo and Thiers Issard, put a basic working edge on their razors when they leave the factory; however, the edge is not "shave ready." In other words, while these razors arrive with a sharp edge capable of cutting hair, it is very unlikely that the factory honing is going to provide the closest and most comfortable shave. To get the best results, you first need to have your razor honed. Many online retailers that carry straight razors offer their customers the option of having the razor professionally honed and certified to be shave ready prior to shipping it to you. If you are new to straight shaving, and unfamiliar with how to hone your own razor, it is a worthwhile investment. You can be confident that the razor you are getting will be properly sharpened, so you don't have to worry about learning the honing process while you decide if straight shaving is right for you. You will still need a strop, of course, as the razor must be stropped prior to every shave to keep the edge aligned and cutting properly. If you decide to stick with straight shaving, you may want to pick up a few basic honing stones and learn to maintain your own edge. Investing in your own honing stones and learning how to properly maintain your razor will save you from having to send your razor off to be honed by a professional on a regular basis.
